Karl Fice-Thomson is a well-known local character who has been involved in youth development for the best part of a decade.
He actually started work as a Plymouth trawlerman but moved to the North Cornish coast in search of surf and adventure. He worked for Rick Stein in Padstow for a few years, before taking a part-time job at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay, working his way up from talk’s supervisor to become an aquarist and finally appointed education officer.
Karl noticed that his enthusiasm for his subject rubbed off on the kids and he started to carve his career path as a teacher. Although he had no formal qualifications he was taken on by Happy Days nurseries as a pre-school teacher. During his time at Happy Days, Karl was instrumental in setting up and running the Pirates Club, which is an educational holiday club for children.
His enthusiasm for youth education and development, earned him the title of Nursery Personality of the Year in 2003, following a nomination from local parents.
Karl joined The Adventure Centre early 2006 and took over as supervisor of Junior Baywatch and Baywatch Babes, which teach children beach safety and basic lifesaving skills and also developed the Baywatch Survival Guide, where he takes on a Ray Mears persona to teach youngsters survival skills.
As well as running the Kids Department, Karl can currently be found lecturing part time for Truro college teaching First Aid and specialising in Paedeatric First Aid. Karl also runs his own First Aid Training business, KFT Educational Services.
